PHIXER for Chorus / Mod FX: swirl that keeps body on mono fold
Stereo chorus, flanger, and phaser feel expensive in headphones. On phone playback, Bluetooth, club PA mono, or livestream fold, near-copies under the dry can comb and thin chest. Modulation drama and mono safety are different jobs. Redesign rate, depth, mix, and width first. Free phase-repair helps after residual L/R fights remain on a stereo dry-plus-wet bed you must keep stereo. It is not a chorus, and it does not replace a true mono listen on dry plus wet.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a chorus, not a flanger, not a phaser, not a widener, not a polarity button, and not a substitute for mono-checking dry plus wet. Redesign the insert or return before you rotate anything.
Three chorus / mod failure modes this page covers
- Stereo chorus under vocal or guitar. Fine in cans; chest hollows on phone or mono fold. Deep guide: Stereo chorus / flanger / phaser vs mono.
- Flanger / phaser sweeps. Moving notches that dig holes when summed with the dry. Same family as short Haas-ish copies.
- Delay throw cousin. Dry plus wet near-copies hollow the same way dry plus chorus can. Cousin guide: PHIXER for Delay Throws.
Fast chorus / mod mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Sum L+R on the group bus or master (or monitor controller mono). Listen to vocal chest and guitar body with the mod FX engaged.
- A/B stereo vs mono across a few LFO cycles. Note what disappears: chest, shell weight, low-mid body that was actually cancellation.
- Mute the wet briefly. Lower rate / depth / width / mix. Prefer mono or mid-leaning chorus when fold matters.
- Confirm on a phone speaker or single earbud path, then again after any bus compressor / EQ / saturation pass.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono listen on dry plus wet
Hard L+R sum or monitor mono with the mod open. Habit: chorus / mod checklist and mono check workflow.
2. Hero dry path before wet density
Prefer one clear dry hero for body. Wet for swirl and motion, not as a second stereo width layer that steals Mid from the dry source.
3. Less rate / depth / width / mix
Slow the LFO, shrink depth, and pull stereo width before chasing plugins. Often enough on its own on phones and clubs.
4. Mono or mid-leaning chorus when fold matters
Prefer mono chorus inserts, or wet that stays closer to Mid. Compare Haas vs phase repair and PHIXER vs stereo imagers.
5. Polarity and latency if a return flips or lags
Inverted send, flipped insert, plugin latency vs dry. Flip Ø when body returns. Align a few samples or ms before spectral tools. Guide: polarity vs phase.
6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo dry-plus-wet bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
Chorus / mod path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo chorus under vocal | Chest dips when summed | Less depth/width; mono listen |
| Stereo chorus on guitar / keys | Body watery on phone fold | Mono or mid-leaning chorus |
| Flanger / phaser sweeps | Moving notches cancel mid | Lower depth; slower rate |
| Delay throw cousin | Dry plus wet near-copies | Delay throws guide |
| Reverb / FX cousin | Dry plus wet hollows fold | Reverb returns guide |
Delay throws cousin (short version)
- Dry plus delay hollows the same way dry plus chorus near-copies on a stereo bed.
- Polarity and timing still come first. Spectral tools after residual L/R fights only.

When not to reach for PHIXER
- Wrong polarity on the return (flip Ø first).
- Obvious plugin latency vs dry (align first).
- You only need quieter or mono-safe swirl (less rate/depth/width / print mono).
- Intentional stereo wash that is meant to thin in mono.
- Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.
